What we love about Polish Pottery

Bold and beautiful colors such as cobalt blue, yellow, green, and deep earth tones are used to produce unique patterns only found in the traditional ceramic art creations of Polish Pottery. Polish Pottery is not only eye catching and attractive, but presents with extreme durability and functionality. Polish Pottery is the perfect complement to any home with versatility in function or as decorative piece of artwork. The unique patterns and designs are fun to mix and match as the underlying color tones blend well together. Polish Pottery is a wonderful complement to any decorating style or motif whether contemporary, traditional, country, European, antique, Southwest, or eclectic.

Cookware, Tableware, Entertaining, Serving…
Polish Pottery is safe to use in the oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer. The paints and glazes are lead and cadmium free. This is accomplished by a special ceramic process starting with a fine grade of white clay found in the surrounding areas of the small village of Boleslawiec (pronounced Bowl-es-WAH-veetz), Poland. Plates and bowls are hand thrown, while other pieces are cast by molds. The pieces creating a highly durable, scratch, chip, and crack resistant surface.

Works of Art…
Each piece of pottery is a hand-made work of art produced in one of many factories located in and around Boleslawiec.  The pieces are hand painted using brushes and a special sponge to stamp or punch designs in a technique that dates back to the early 1800s.

Design Inspirations…
Designs using traditional circles and dots were first inspired by farmers using the peacock feather (the universally recognized trait of polish pottery).  Many designs today continue the “peacock eye” design infused through updated and contemporary patterns. Hundreds of traditional and signature designs are currently available.

Unikat or Signed Artwork…
Another type of design is created by certified master artists.  Their signature patterns or one of a kind appearance are called “Unikat” or “Unique”.  These signature pieces are designated with the hand painted word “unikat”, or a “u” followed by a number, then usually hand signed or initialed by the artist.  Those pieces with an artist’s signature are highly sought after as they are rare works of art and a collector’s dream. Some factories produce a pattern unique to the factory and may have a stamped insignia of “unikat” next to the factory trademark.

Authenticity…
Each piece is an individual creation with no two pieces exactly alike. Slight variations in color and patterns are characteristic of the hand painted pottery.  Authentic Polish Pottery will have a factory trademark printed on the bottom of the piece.  We proudly carry only first quality pieces from the award winning Ceramika Artystyczna and Zaklady Ceramiczne Boleslawiec factories.  We have some designs from the Manufaktura factory as well.
